“All your educational systems and all your cultural beliefs, force you to be ambitious, to be somebody. But to be somebody means creating anxieties in a silent pool, ripples and waves. The greater the ambition, the more tidal is the wave of anxiety. You can become almost insane desiring. Trying to be somebody, you are trying the impossible, because basically you are nobody. Zen has an absolutely unique perception into the nothingness of everyone. It does not teach you any ambition, it does not teach you to be someone else. It simply wants you to know that in the deepest part of your being you are still nothing, you are still carrying the original purity which is not even contaminated by an idea of “I.”

GETTING TO KNOW YOUR VAGABOND: Ancestry
So I’m 1/2 Mexican, grew up in Mexico and, although some may see me as some gringo, I feel more Mexican then American in many ways.
Then I found out I may be descended from Hernán Cortés - the Spanish conquistador that raped, pillaged, and slaughtered the indigenous Aztec people, but an adventurer in his own right.
So… Identity crisis much?

FILM FOR ACTION: Artist’s displaced in New Delhi

The story: In New Delhi, Kathputli Colony is going to be leveled and generations of artists, performers, and magicians will be displaced. Why, you ask? For a mall. Another mall in another sprawling urban center. Capitalism foresaking the lives of thousands… again.

Where you come in: This is your chance to do something - or at the very least get their story heard. I’ve met these filmmakers and their hearts are in the right place. Contribute a $1 or $100 - everything matters to the men, women, and children of Kathputli Colony.

WATCH THIS-OF-THE-DAY: It’s time for change

2012: A Time for Change is a documentary film that takes the whole doom and gloom concept that we have been fed recently of an apocalypse and reminds us that it is indeed an opportunity for a global shift, a heightened awareness, and a more proactive approach to living and respecting our planet.

Because what is life meant for if not living it to its fullest?

We all have a contribution to make. Think about it: What’s yours?

MEXICO PHOTO SET: The Pyramids of Monte Alban

The Zapotec civilization stands in the shadows of the better known Aztecs of Mexico, but the excavated city of Monte Alban sits proudly atop lush, verdent hills, just 20 minutes outside Oaxaca City.

The impressive site is thought to be only 10% excavated from its original grandiose urban plan. Today, Monte Alban is known for its extraordinary pyramids, precisely plotted astrological observatories, and stately Zapotec residences. This ancient city may have been claimed by the the Earth herself, but she remains as alive and as vibrant as ever!

MEXICO IN B&W, part 2: Getting there

The saying goes that it’s always about the journey, not the destination. But as we amble on, absorbing the bounty of beauty this world offers us, there must also be moments that stop time. Whether you find yourself looking out a bus window, around a crowded bus station, or down at your own weary feet, you’ll indeed find that your destination may have already been found.

More than the tequila, Salsa, y sabor, one might argue that it is the quite moments that defined our journey…and that define Mexico

MEXICO PHOTO SET: Art and Culture

Throughout Mexico City and Oaxaca, walls are cavasses and the peoples’ voices are heard in every brushstroke and in every aerosol can. Far from subtle, these art works speak for themselves.

MEXICO PHOTO SET: Food and drank

Ubiquitous street food vendors roll around their carts, bicycles, and vans into the parks and zocalos of Mexico’s town centers, and the fresh scent of a thousand flavors colors your palette before you even take a single bite.

This, ladies and vagabonds, is just a fragment of Mexico’s rich culture… and it’s fuckin’ tasty! ¡Sabor!

More to come…
