JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL PARK - Sun and Sky in California’s High Desert

A mecca for climbers, hikers, campers, and stargazers, Joshua Tree National Park lies just 35 minutes east of Palm Springs and 2 hours southeast of Los Angeles. Prickly cacti begin flowering around this time of year and the typically frigid nights give way to temperate climates perfect for campfires and star shows. Spring in the desert brings 18 species of lizards, tortoises, eagles, and butterflies out of their shells, cocoons, and nests to roams amidst the flowering forests of Joshua Trees, the namesake for this otherworldly California destination.

Upon entering Joshua Tree National Park - $15 for a 7-day vehicle pass and $25 for a camping pass - one is immediately greeted by amorphous granite structures. Masquerading as what one might refer to simply as hills or mountains, these craggy piles of rock are actually monzogranites, or the final stage of what was once magma. Their unique shapes seem frozen in time, making it easy to daydream of the time when they first teemed from the earth centuries ago. Coupled with the unusual crooked-trunked Joshua Trees, this place gives way to our childhood imaginings when we turned clouds into objects more palatable to the human mind. But make no mistake about it, the earth and sky above here are unquestionably out of this world.

Next time you’re in California looking for a road trip with the edge to make you feel like you took a wrong turn down the highway and ended up on Mars, don’t forget to check out Joshua Tree. The saloons and Old West varnish of the past blends seamlessly with the new vintage stores and speakeasy dive bars on Highway 62, sure to keep you off the grid and close to the natural rhythm and hum of Mother Earth just a little longer.

HAPPY MONKEY - typo, but it stays
This Monday, don’t be afraid to sleep in a little.

This photo titled ‘First Winter’ (via Ben Torode on 500px) depicts one of the many baby Snow Monkeys of the aptly named Monkey Park in Jigokudani, Nagano, Japan. Here you can have the chance to see the snow monkeys bathing in the hot springs. I have tentative plans to go to Japan next year and definitely plan on visiting this place.

SPRING

I believe everything happens for a reason. The last time I saw a peacock was when I left Olympos, Turkey after living and working there for 2 months in the Spring of 2011. By that time I had been traveling for 10 months from Los Angeles to Thailand to India to Turkey and I was getting ready to see what Germany had in store for me. I left the US with less than $500 in my pocket and arrived in Bangkok with less than $100. Money was no object. My life was being guided. No question. That visit from the Olympos peacock was a road sign signaling rebirth and renewal to come. The gratitude that sprung from me at that time was something I felt deep in my bones.

Last week marked 2 years since this sacred animal had made its appearance in my life and on the first day of Spring of this year, the signs we literally looking me right in the eye. At Palos Verdes, California’s Strawberry Lane peacocks roam freely among residential homes, yards, and gardens. I’m not sure why they are drawn there or why I was guided there but one thing is certain of this brightly feathered road sign: what comes next is going to be beautiful.

WORLD WATER DAY 2013

In celebration of World Water Day (March 22nd), I’d like to share the power of what a little classic H2O can do.

Village Volunteers is an organization I worked with in 2007. As a volunteer I was an Education Specialist and traveled throughout Kenya teaching sexual health education and creative writing. In addition, I had the unique opportunity to campaign with a Member of Parliament candidate in Maasailand with Namunyak Maasai Welfare founder Emmanuel Leina. Since leaving Kenya, I have remained connected with my Kenyan friends and social entrepreneurs, but also with Village Volunteers.

Since I volunteered with VV, they have expanded their programs and partnerships to include Nepali sustainable farming organization Mountain Eco Farm. Lush, rolling hills are giving way to verdant petals in the fields and gardens of their latest partner demonstrating what a little access to water can do for a community.
